How to find out your voice type: soprano, mezzo or contralto
Two ways in. If you know your lowest note and the highest one you can sing comfortably, put them in and you get a straight answer. If you don't, answer six questions about how your voice behaves and you get a good first guess.

What soprano, mezzo-soprano and contralto actually mean
Voice type is where your voice is most comfortable, not how high you can shout. Two women with the same top note can be different types, because one sits there easily and the other only visits.
Soprano
Typical range C4 to C6The highest female voice. Sopranos sit comfortably around the top of the treble staff and find the notes above C5 bright rather than hard work. In a choir, the melody line.
Mezzo-soprano
Typical range A3 to A5The middle, and the most common women's voice. Most pop songs written for women sit here. Many women told "alto" in school choir are mezzos who were put on the harmony because someone had to be.
Contralto
Typical range F3 to F5The lowest female voice, and less common than people think. A true contralto has a full, dark sound low down and finds everything above G4 a stretch, even warmed up.

We read the highest note you sing comfortably. F5 and above reads soprano. G4 up to E5 reads mezzo-soprano. Below G4 reads contralto. Your lowest note is used to check the range makes sense and to draw your band on the chart.
With the six questions
Each answer leans toward one type. Speaking pitch, where singing gets hard, where your voice flips, which singers feel comfortable to sing along with. The type with the most weight wins, and the result tells you how clear the lean was. It's a first guess. Your actual notes beat it every time.

Why your voice type might read lower than you remember
A voice that hasn't sung in a while loses its top first. The notes are still there, but the comfortable ceiling drops, and a test that reads the comfortable ceiling will call you lower than you are. On a chart, time away from singing looks exactly like a lower voice type.
So if you sang soprano at twenty and this says mezzo, don't argue with it yet. Warm up most days for a few weeks and test again. If the top comes back, so does the type.
Questions about voice types
How do I find out my voice type?
Find the highest note you can sing comfortably, not the highest you can reach. For women, F5 and above usually reads soprano, G4 up to E5 mezzo-soprano, and below G4 contralto. If you do not know your notes, the six-question version of this test gives a first guess, and the free vocal range test measures them for you.
What voice type am I if I sang alto in choir?
Probably a mezzo-soprano. Choirs need an alto section, and women who can read music or hold a harmony often get put there whatever their voice type. A true contralto is much less common than the number of women who sang alto in school.
Am I an alto or a soprano?
Look at where your voice is comfortable, not where it can reach. If the notes around C5 feel bright and comfortable once you are warm, you lean soprano. If they feel like work but the middle feels comfortable, you are more likely a mezzo. If everything above G4 is a stretch, you may be a contralto, which is what most people mean by alto.
What are the female voice types?
The three main female voice types are soprano (about C4 to C6), mezzo-soprano (about A3 to A5) and contralto (about F3 to F5). Classical singing splits these further, but for choosing songs and keys these three are what matter.
What is the most common female voice type?
Mezzo-soprano. Most women sit in the middle, and most pop songs written for women are pitched for that middle.
Can your voice type change?
Your anatomy does not change much, but your comfortable range does. After years away from singing the top usually drops, so you can test lower than you used to. Voices also tend to settle lower with age and around menopause. Regular warm-ups often bring back notes that seemed gone.
Is this voice type test accurate?
The notes path uses the same rule as our vocal range test, so it is as accurate as the notes you enter. The six-question path is a guess based on how your voice behaves, and the result tells you how clear the guess was. A voice teacher listening in person is still the best judge.
